Welcome to Peace Corps/Togo
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy created The Peace Corps with three goals in mind:
1. Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.
2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.
3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.
Fifty years later, the players have changed, but the goals are still the same.

My most cherished moments have been simple and unexpected: chatting and laughing with my counterpart under a neem tree and realizing she has become one of my best friends, being greeted by name and with a huge smile by young people I've worked with, singing a local song with the ladies in my market as I shop, expressing myself in French and noticing that I'm actually being understood, or giggling gleefully with the girls that live next door as we dance in the first and long-awaited rain at the end of dry season.
